The MacKaye Shelter expresses the spirit of the early structures of the Appalachian Mountains. Architectural features include English half timbering with stone and antique white oak infill, hand split cedar shake roofing, deep overhangs, natural cedar posts and handrails, and tobacco stick pickets.
Benton MacKaye was the naturalist who first proposed what became the Appalachian Trail. In his honor we dedicate the MacKaye Shelter.
